Director of Continuous Improvement (ret.)
BC Ministry of Forests and Range
“I’ve spent my whole career putting out fires. I think I am going to go light a few.”
Calm, centered and intent upon delivering the public service mandate to the best of her ability, Shelley Sullivan was a visionary force during her tenure as Director of the Business Improvement Branch for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Following a ministry-wide staff survey, Ms. Sullivan took part in The Leader’s Discipline™ in 2005 and began to explore the implementation of an ambitious engagement strategy called The Road Ahead. Working in collaboration with the Deputy Minister’s office, Bob Chartier, Berlin Eaton, Cognitive Edge, and champion of The Road Ahead, Donna Horn, Shelley generated a wave that evolves to this day, equipping leaders with skill and tools in the areas of coaching, conflict resolution, facilitation, engagement, continuous improvement and cultural transformation. In 2006, the provincial government engaged dozens of these practitioners from the Ministry of Forests to assist Ministry of Health staff with facilitating community gatherings throughout the province during the Conversation on Health, the largest and widest-ranging public discussion on health care in the history of BC. Ms. Sullivan leaves a legacy of leadership across the public service, having invited hundreds of career public servants to practice and hone their leadership skills in real, applicable ways that deliver benefits to the citizens of BC.
